Fisheries Research Institute

Bried description

Fisheries Research Institute (F.R.I) is one of the five specialized research institutes of N.AG.RE.F, being responsible to conduct research and to promote technological development in the fishery sector. The Institute is located 17 km away from Kavala city, at the centre of a marine area with rich fishery grounds and high biodiversity in the surrounding lagoons, lakes and rivers. The research activities of F.R.I cover a wide range of fields in the marine research and applications sector. F.R.I. participates in many research programmes (European Community and National programmes) which consist the main funding source for its research activities.

Laboratory of Benthic Ecology & Technology

Main objects of the laboratory is the study of organismic (species, genera, families) and ecological (habitats, biotopes) biodiversity of transitional (lagoons, river delta's) and coastal ecosystems, as well as their interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment. Mapping and study of benthic macrophytes (seagrasses, macroalgae, coralligenous bottoms) are of particular interest because they constitute: (1) priority habitats of marine biodiversity maintenance, (2) high value marine resources in the fishery, (3) sensitive bioindicators of shallow ecosystems water quality. Focus is given to the study of demographic characteristics (e.g. abundance, biomass, growth, etc) of certain of economic value benthic species. Efforts are made to utilise particular ecophysiological characteristics of macroalgae, e.g. nutrient recycling, trophic value, biosorption of heavy metals etc, in order to develope state of the art technologies for the protection of the marine environment, e.g. integrated aquaculture, antifouling technologies.
